Since 2017, Moduls Engineering has been participating in multiple National Theatre reconstruction and renovation projects. Currently, National Theatre spectator seating dismantling and partial premises renovation is nearing its completion.

“The National Theatre is a symbol of existence and independence of this country and the participation in the National Theatre renovation in the year of Latvia’s 100th anniversary is truly symbolic. Each project that supports long-term existence of our cultural, historical and national heritage is very important for Moduls Engineering. In this project, one of the largest tasks was the replacement of over 800 seats taking into account the historical and emotional importance of the theatre. New seats providing the balance between today’s ergonomic requirements and theatre's historical design were designed and manufactured by a long-term Moduls Engineering partner in Italy especially for the National Theatre. That Italian factory has manufactured seating both for our projects, such as VEF Culture Palace and Russian Drama Theatre, and for theatre houses in Florence, Siena and other places worldwide,” explained Jevgēņijs Savčuks, Moduls Engineering Member of the Board.

Overall, 803 seats will be replaced in this project: 406 in the stalls and boxes, 150 on the first balcony and 247 on the second balcony. Partial renovation of the premises includes floor sanding and polishing, carpet replacement in the stalls and on the balconies and door restauration. Moduls Engineering supplied seats from the Italian factory specialising in theatre furniture and accessories. Seating manufactured by that factory are installed in the stalls of VEF Culture Palace, Russian Drama Theatre and in many theatre houses in Florence, Siena and other places worldwide.

The seating installed in the National Theatre were made in accordance with the modern ergonomic principles while preserving classical styling. The latest technologies were used in the making of the chairs. The back and the seat of the chairs are ergonomically curved and upholstered using highly durable Alpaca velvet furniture fabric in accordance with the strictest European standards. A special part of the upholstery, high-density polyurethane foam, ensures long and comfortable seating.

Last year, a new National Theatre annex was commissioned. The new 203 m2 three-storey annex was designed like the existing new auditorium using similar materials and glazing to preserve the same style throughout the theatre building. In that project, Moduls Engineering performed installation of all low-voltage and electrical networks. The project included the installation of a fire detection and alarm system, as well as a central public address system for emergencies. A modern security and access control system and a video surveillance system were installed there too. The new National Theatre annex was built on the canal side and is accessible for people with limited mobility ensuring the compliance with all accessibility requirements. Moduls Engineering performed installation of the necessary utility networks and a lift in the annex to support its functionality.
